Sew Fun Project 8 & 9 (2 October 2022) Pencil Case & Lined Zippered Pouch

Pencil Case

The worksheet for this project was actually handed out earlier in August but I didn't have time to sew it. As mentioned in an earlier post, the instructor Benny kindly allowed me to go in for a 2nd complimentary session.

Lined Zippered Pouch

This was an unofficial "extra" project - we were allowed to choose the length of our pouch, for example it could be twice as long as the previous zippered pouch. There was the option of sewing a patch-on pocket on the inside lining (I didn't).

Nowadays I'm using this zippered pouch as my mask bag when I take public transport.

Sew Fun Project 7 (4 & 11 September 2022) Drawstring Bucket Bag

I actually took 3 weeks to complete the last project cos I couldn't complete it within the 10-lesson course.

We learnt how to cut & join bias binding. This bias binding was used as piping cover and the resulting piping was sewn to the bottom of the main body which was attached to the oval shaped base. I used purple fabric for the inner lining of the main body.

We attached eyelets around the top of the bag (using a table press) & inserted the cord drawstring. After I learnt how to knit a cord in 2022, I plan to knit a purple cord drawstring - though being a die-hard procrastinator, I haven't started on that at all 😛

Sew Fun Project 6 (21 & 28 August 2022) Reversible Gusset Tote Bag

Solid colour patch pocket on printed fabric side

The gusset curves at the bottom - we had lots of practise to sew the curved edges cos there were 8 curves to complete.

Sew Fun Project 5 (7 & 14 August 2022) Reversible Sling Bag

This reversible sling bag has pockets on both sides (solid colour pocket on printed fabric & vice versa), T-shape box base & a magnetic closure.

Sew Fun Project 4 (31 July 2022) Simple Zippered Pouch

Riddle: What is Beethoven's favourite fruit?

Answer: (In the tune of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 1st movement Allegro famous 4 note motif) Ba-na-na-na.

Sew Fun Project 3 (31 July 2022) Reversible Drawstring Pouch

The 1st of many reversible sewing projects.

1 side has T-shape box base & the other side has M-shape paper bag base.

Sew Fun Project 2 (24 July 2022) Tote Bag

Tote bag folded inside drop down pocket

The inside seam of this tote bag is a French seam and there is a patch-on pocket outside in front. The drop down pocket is inside at the back & top centre of the tote bag.

The straps were made from fabric using a bias tape maker - I spent ages ironing the fabric through the contraption before I could sew the straps.

Sew Fun Project 1 (17 July 2022) Tool Kit

The sewing studio gave us 4 sewing tools to put in the completed tool kit: 2 drawing pens (a white pencil for dark coloured fabric & a self-disappearing alcohol-based purple pen for light coloured fabric), a tiny scissors/thread cutter and a stitch un-picker.

Beginner Sewing Class

 Before (April 2022)

After (June 2022)

Last year I repaired my late mother's Singer Sewing Machine. Mr Tan (Guan Lee Long Sewing Machine at Chin Swee) installed an electric motor. So the metal foot pedal at the bottom is merely decorative now.

Mr Tan recommended the sewing class conducted by Uyii cos he services their sewing machines. I've seen the poster for their sewing classes previously. I was able to use my SkillsFuture credits to pay for the course fee & only paid S$50 for tools, materials and administration fee.

I started the course at the beginning of July and the instructor Benny was kind enough to let me to go in for 2 extra complimentary sessions when the 10 week course ended. I finished the last project in October and I haven't touched any sewing machine since 😞

Elaine gave me this book more than a decade ago... Is 2023 the year I actually sew this bag?
